This afternoon i have been resetting a password on a laptop and was initially using ophcrack but the live cd kept hanging so was looking for another way when i came across kon-boot. This live cd works with both windows and linux OS and is as straight forward as is possible.
Insert the disc and boot from cd. Once you see the initial screen press enter and then wait for the system to boot into normal mode in about 10 seconds and bam......password gone. It was as easy as that on the vista laptop. Not sure about other OS's but the write ups do say other OS's including linux distro's as well.
I cant upload at the mo due to my dial up connection but it is easily googled for.
Hope this helps others as it did me when doing repairs without the password
