i think my laptop is toast

i was at work and when i came home, my computer screen says this..

missing operationg system.

imma newbie at computers and slowly learning from scratch. does that mean ihave to get another copy of windows xp. I tried putting in my recovery disc but its not even getting past the Missing operating system screen. even when i tried to reboot.

There was no "Press Enter to boot from CD"?
Is the error infront of booting? I dont think so. So u maybe need to change the boot Sequence to CD first.

right, I think you forgot to change the boot settings in BIOS. when booting from CD you should be able to enter the recovery console, you could either enter the console and type fixmbr (maybe just the bootsector is damaged), or you can start a normal install but chose "repair installation" when prompted for the type of install you want to do. let us know if it worked...
