Need guidlines on how to use IRC

I had never used IRC before
I want to start by using suck-o IRC service.
How can I do this and what are the benefit?

Well, you would start by either using the web IRC client app (on the 'Home' page) or downloading an IRC client like X-chat (my personal favorite) or Hydra or even pidgin. You can find the configuration information on the Home page as well.

The benefits are the same as any other IM chat protocol, only it's more of a party line where multiple people can view and interact with the conversation... much more personal then say a conversation over forum post.

Downside is that people come and go, some times are more populated then others, so you may find few people during some hours.

And most important: when you ask a question you don't expect an answer in one or two minutes and then log off because no one answers. This makes the channel inhabitants laugh, sigh and facepalm at you.

It's a nice place to hang 24/7 or whenever you're at your computer.

You can also register your nickname on the irc server:

- log on with your desired username
- type in /msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email>
- Next time you log on type: /msg NickServ IDENTIFY <password>

i really enjoy the suck-o irc server and have had some very good conversations there.
